Investigation and Remediation of Contaminated Soil and Groundwater

Location: Rock Port, MO

Client: Petroleum Client

This large car and truck fueling facility has been used for gasoline and diesel retail operations since 1977. Currently, five underground storage tanks (USTs) are in operation: three 20,000-gallon USTs containing diesel, one 20,000-gallon UST containing premium unleaded gasoline, and one 16,000-gallon UST containing regular unleaded gasoline. The tank system consists of
10 diesel fuel dispensers under a canopy (west side of convenience store) and four gasoline dispensers under a canopy (north side of convenience store).

 

EMR conducted a UST compliance inspection and observed 16 meters on four diesel dispensers and one gasoline dispenser leaking product to the subsurface soil as there was no secondary containment beneath the dispensers. Because the location of three City of Rock Port public supply water wells were 240 feet down gradient of the contamination source area, there was an urgency to address the potential groundwater contamination.

 

EMR completed an expedited site assessment, risk assessment, remedial investigation, feasibility study, and Corrective Action Plan (CAP). Upon approval of the CAP by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Missouri Petroleum Storage Tank Insurance Fund (MOPSTIF), it was determined full-scale, in situ bioremediation would be implemented. EMR has completed the pilot study for in situ chemical oxidation and in situ enhanced bioremediation. Remedial design was finalized in February 2015. Upon approval of the remedial design, EMR entered in a “pay for performance” contract with the client and MOPSTIF. Full scale remediation was implemented in April 2015 and, to date, significant reductions in groundwater contaminant concentrations have been achieved.
